Verizon Center Leak: Example for Tampa Roof Repair Firms to Follow

By Stacy Mellete

The dunks and jump shots were delayed in Washington, D.C., as water dripped through a leak in the Verizon Center’s roof on January 11, 2014. Although fixed in relatively short order, Washington Wizards team owner Ted Leonsis addressed the issue on a January 12 blog post hosted on the Monumental Network website:

  • … [T]wo delays were created by dripping water on the court, and a wet floor creates potential safety issues for the players. …
  • Our staff worked very efficiently to identify where the leaks were. And we always have staff on hand that are experienced roofers with issues such as this. We also literally had to get atop of the roof outside to see what the issues were. The big freeze this past week might have created a small fissure in roofing materials, and as the rain came on and some ice was melting, some water was able to seep in.
  • There were also staff up in the rafters and on the catwalks doing inspections and they were able to create a short term fix via some temporary tarp installation that stopped the leaks.

The event sets a great example for any Tampa roof repair company to follow. With the arena staff’s quick and well-thought-out response, the leak in the roof, which might have otherwise called for the cancelation of the game, only resulted in delays totaling 57 minutes.

With Florida’s unpredictable weather, the same prompt response should be expected when emergency repairs are needed by any of the state’s residents. Although the state does not see the same kind of weather that caused the stadium’s sudden pickle, houses and commercial buildings here are often subject to hurricanes that bring the threat of wind and hail damage.

Quick response is warranted when any natural Floridian weather phenomenon break out. Especially during hurricanes, being able to get help to do the necessary roof repairs for a stubborn leak is essential to minimizing any further damage.

As with the Verizon Center quick fix, an emergency repair may be a temporary solution. Common household items like tarp, plastic cement, and duct tape can be used to fix leaks temporarily by patching small holes on the roof surface. Although best performed by a trained Tampa roof repair technician, home and building owners who have had experience doing minor repairs on the roof can undertake these quick fixes.

Whether you’re a homeowner or a building manager, it’s important to pay heed to the quick thinking of the staff of Verizon Center in managing the leak. Trust only reputable roofing companies, like Affordable Roofing Systems, to follow up on permanent repairs, as soon as possible.
