What You Need To Know About Metal Roofing Underlayment

Metal roofing continues to be one of the most popular choices among homeowners along the Gulf Coast because of how beautiful and durable the material is. Also, it doesn’t require much maintenance and is resistant to wind and fire. Installing it must be done properly, which includes using the appropriate underlayment. However, the options and the process involved for this is closely the same as the other roofing materials like asphalt shingles.

In today’s blog post, local roofing contractor Tampa FL, Affordable Roofing Systems explains everything you need to know about metal roofing underlayment.

Options for Underlayment

A typical metal roof underlayment is often made of a layer of felt or building paper. It can help prevent leaks from entering the attic and offers a bit of insulation. While local building codes specify the weight of the paper, a 30-pound product is considered the most ideal. Before installing the metal panels, an extra slip sheet layer may be placed on top of the felt underlayment. Red rosin paper is often used to prevent the metal from sticking to the felt during installation.

Meanwhile, other underlayment materials for metal roofing are available, such as those made of polymer. These are thinner and easier to work with than layers of felt and rosin paper. These sheets are not only strong but are also waterproof.

Pointers for Installation

Working on the metal roof underlayment is easy. Strips of felt paper or polymer underlayment are added across the roof on a horizontal position. Layers must overlap by at least four inches as this is being done. The ends of each strip are stapled. The middle of the strips must also be stapled once per square foot. Underlayment can likewise be overlapped at the valley or the part of the roof where two roof planes meet.
