Different Parts of a Standard Roof and their Functions

By Stacy Mellete

Knowing the basic parts of a standard roof and how they work can help you make more informed decisions.

As one reputable residential roofing installer in Tampa FL,  part of our job is to educate people.

Basic Parts of the Roof

1. Rafters

Rafters are frames that support the skeleton of the roof. They rest on the ridge and connect the wall plate of the external walls. Generally, they come in series, providing a base to support the external roofing components.

Reminder: Always check the alignment upon installation of rafters.

2. Decking Boards

Decking boards or roof decking provides a level surface between the weatherproofing layers (coatings, coverings)  and the roof’s structural components (trusses and joints).

Reminder: Opt for durable decking board materials like plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), tongue and groove, step sheathing and V- Rustic.

3. Underlayments

Underlayments are water-resistant barrier materials that support the roof deck. The primary function of residential roof underlayments is to prevent moisture buildup.

Reminder: Leading roof manufacturers like GAF recommend using quality materials, such as fiberglass-reinforced underlayment.

4. Covering

Covering is the outermost component of the residential roofing system. The most common types of roof covering include asphalt, metal, concrete, and tiles.

Reminder: Location is one of the most significant factors when choosing roof-covering materials.

5. Flashings

Flashings provide additional support in preventing roof leaks and clogged gutters. Common roof flashing materials include stainless steel and aluminum.

Reminder: Metal sheet flashing could be your best option for roof flashing due to its durability.
